May is Burro Awareness Month and what better way to mark it than to advocate for the creation of a National Wild Burro Range in Arizona, the state where over half of America's remaining wild burros reside! The Obama Administration has the authority to designate the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Black Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) as a wild burro range, an act that would confer greater protections to the cherished wild burros living there. The Black Mountain burro population the largest, genetically healthy and robust burro population left in the U.S. Please sign the petition asking President Obama to honor the animal who is the symbol of his party by taking this action before the end of his term!

Burros may receive less attention than their flashy wild horse cousins, but these animals are just as intriguing and worthy of protection. Did you know, for example, that burros come in a variety of colors including pink, roan and blue? Or that a burro's markings (leg striping or striping in the shape of a cross) provide clues to their ancestry? Or that instead of immediately fleeing a potential threat, intelligent burros will carefully size up situations before deciding what to do? Please read on for more information about our amazing wild burros and how these animals are making their last stand in the American Southwest.
