Tell BLM: No Gas or Oil Leases in Wild Horse Habitat
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada wants to lease 124 parcels of land in the Battle Mountain District for oil and gas development. Of these, 44 parcels overlap five wild horse Herd Management Areas. The agency admits that such development can result in disruption and displacement of federally-protected wild horses.
BLM routinely excludes key habitat for sensitive species and archeologically important sites from oil and gas development. Please take a moment to tell the BLM to exclude from the leasing plan the 44 land parcels that overlap the protected wild horse habitat.
Humboldt Roundup Underway
The BLM Humboldt Herd Area (HA) helicopter roundup began on January 30, 2015 in a more than 200,000-acre public land area. The BLM is "zeroing out" -- or completely eliminating -- all wild horses in the Humboldt HA. Essentially the BLM has turned this public lands area over to private ranching interests, who complain loudly and frequently about the presence of wild horses on "their" grazing allotments.
So far, 160 of the 180 wild horses that remain in this area have been captured. Among those stampeded and rounded up by helicopter: mares with tiny foals -- including the baby pictured at left -- by their sides and mares who are heavily pregnant. Laura Leigh of Wild Horse Education is on the ground. You can read her daily reports here.
