Urge Senate Committee to Reject Grazing Act That's Bad for Wild Horses
The public land ranching industry is up to it again. The ranchers are looking to further obstruct the proper administration of grazing on federal public lands by locking in grazing permits for 20 years and eliminating requirements for environmental review and public input.
The “Grazing Improvement Act" would eliminate the opportunity to address the grossly inequitable treatment of wild horses and burros on our public lands, where over 80% of forage in designated wild horse and burro habitat areas is allocated to livestock.
The Energy and Natural Resources Committee will determine the fate of this bill in the coming days. They need to hear from you now!
UPDATE: Virginia Range Wild Horses, Rescued Thanks to AWHPC Supporters, Begin New Life!
Today, we are happy to report the rescue of 23 wild horses who were captured by the Nevada Department of Agriculture from their homes on the Virginia Range, near Reno.
This past weekend, 10 of the horses -- including Red and his family of seven, a senior stallion and his gelding friend -- moved to their forever home at DreamCatcher Wild Horse and Burro Sanctuary in California. Without the generosity of AWHPC supporters, this rescue could not have happened.
Thank you to everyone who stepped up to save these wonderful horses! To view pictures and video of Red's move and the horses at their new home in California please click here.
President Obama Nominates Neil Kornze to Head the BLM
President Obama has nominated Nevada native Neil Kornze as the next director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Kornze, a former aide to Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), has been the BLM's principal deputy director since March.. In June, Kornze issued the following statement in response to the release of the National Academy of Sciences report, Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program: A Way Forward:
"We commend the National Academy of Sciences for their diligent work on this complex issue. The BLM looks forward to reviewing the report in detail and building on the report's findings and recommendations to meet the formidable challenges facing the agency in managing wild horses and burros. Our agency is committed to protecting and managing these iconic animals for current and future generations."
Six months later, the Interior Department and BLM have taken no steps to implement the reforms recommended by the NAS and, in fact, have actively distorted and contradicted its findings.
AWHPC hopes that Kornze lives up to his verbal commitment to protecting wild horses and burros by reversing the BLM's present course and implementing the recommendations of the expert scientific panel, which the BLM itself requested and paid for. American Mustang Premieres to Rave Reviews & Sold Out Audiences
The world premiere of the exciting new documentary American Mustang at the Denver Film Festival last weekend was a smashing success.
The film, produced by key AWHPC supporter and noted Sonoma Valley vintner Ellie Phipps Price, received rave reviews and front-page coverage in the Denver press. American Mustang next screens at the Napa Valley Film Festival this weekend. This film is proving to be a very important tool for bringing awareness about the plight of wild horses to the public, especially to people who love horses but have no idea what's happening to these national icons in the American West.
AWHPC congratulates Ellie and the American Mustang team -- including producer Henry Ansbacher and Director Monty Miranda -- for their excellent work. Bravo! For all the news and reviews on this film, please click here.
