Dear Supporter,

President Obama Moves to Make Horse Slaughter Illegal - Act Now To Secure A Permanent Ban

The Obama Administration's 2014 budget for the U.S. Department of Agriculture includes language that would effectively ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S. This is a huge step forward for the efforts to protect American horses -- both domestic and wild -- from this cruelest of fates. The language must now survive the budget process in the House and the Senate. Meanwhile we urgently need to your help to pass federal legislation to permanently ban horse slaughter in the U.S. as well as prohibit the transport of U.S. horses over the border to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Please take action below to protect more than 150,000 U.S. horses who are brutally slaughtered each year.

Six More Virginia Range Mustangs Rescued...Thanks to Your Help!

The first Virginia Range wild horses rescued under the new Cooperative Agreement between Return to Freedom (AWHPC parent organization) and the state of Nevada were picked up by the Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund on April 1. The new agreement prevents the state from shipping captured mustangs to a slaughter auction where advocates must outbid kill buyers to save the horses. To date, a total of 147 wild Nevada mustangs have been saved from slaughter thanks to Hidden Valley and other local Nevada advocates, with financial support from AWHPC.  NBC News Exclusive Report on America's Wild Horses - Delayed Again

NBC's special report on America's wild horses has been postponed again, this time due to the tragic bombing at the Boston Marathon. Earlier this week, NBC Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers tweeted a preview of her report as an "exclusive look at what's happening to America's wild horses. Why are more now captive than free?"  We are hopeful that the segment -- which promises to be an in-depth examination of our government's treatment of wild horses and burros -- will now air next week

Please stay tuned for more news on the NBC piece.
