Hello Supporter,

Submit Comments on Forest Service 15-20 Year Plan for California Herd

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is seeking public comments on its 15-20 year plan for the Devil's Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory in northern California. Unfortunately, the USFS is proposing to reduce the horses' habitat in the territory by nearly 10%, and is preparing for what could be a massive roundup and removal in October 2013.

The USFS needs to hear from you (and your friends and family) that Americans cherish WILD HORSES and want them PROTECTED on the small habitat that has been designated for their use. Please take a minute to submit comments to protect this unique wild horse herd.

Heroic Virginia Range Mustang Rescue Continues

Today we celebrate not only Wednesday's rescue of 41 more Nevada mustangs -- including little Diamond and her mom at left -- but also the impressive team effort that has gone in to saving these horses.

Led on the ground by Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund, Least Resistance Training Concepts, Alliance of Wild Horse Advocates and others, and financially supported by generous AWHPC donors from across the world, the rescue has saved 141 wild horses so far. All of these mustangs were captured by the state from the Virginia Range near Reno and sent to a slaughter auction in Fallon. Please read updates about this latest, heroic mustang rescue here. And please be sure to read this tribute to the transport crew, who continue to work grueling, long hours to make sure that all horses arrive safely in their temporary homes.

Judge Orders Humane Standards in BLM Owyhee Roundup

A federal court judge in Reno lifted a restraining order to allow the BLM to complete the Owyhee roundup in Nevada, but imposed humane restrictions on the agency. These include a prohibition on routine electric shocking of wild horses and stampeding foals so quickly that they become separated from their families. Photojournalist and Wild Horse Education president Laura Leigh brought the lawsuit after documenting the ongoing atrocities at the Owyhee roundup. The roundup began on December 21, 2012 and is expected to be completed in the next few days, with more than 900 wild horses removed.  Please also see AWHPC's eyewitness report on brutal treatment of wild horses at the Owyhee roundup for more information.

Roundup Update

The BLM will begin the first of two roundups left on its fall/winter capture schedule next week. On or about January 18, the agency will launch a large-scale helicopter roundup in the Diamond Complex, a vast, 660-square-mile area in eastern Nevada. The capture operation seeks to remove 603 of the estimated 813 horses living in the Complex.

Meanwhile, the BLM has rescheduled its roundup in Utah's Swasey Herd Management Area (HMA) for Friday, February 11, 2013, following completion of the Diamond capture operation. The BLM aims to capture 262 wild horses in the Swasey roundup, of which 164 will be permanently removed from the range. The remainder of the horses will be released back to the range after 49 mares are treated with the PZP-22 fertility control vaccine.
