Please Speak Up for California Wild Horses and Burros
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans for an "emergency" roundup to remove 85% of the wild horses and burros in California’s Twin Peaks and Buckhorn Herd Management Areas (HMAs). The agency is claiming that drought and this summer's "Rush Fire," which burned 39% of the Twin Peaks HMA, require the removal of the horses. The BLM proposes to remove wild horses from the burned area as well as from a five-mile "buffer" zone - yet the agency will allow livestock to resume grazing in the "buffer" area! The BLM cannot move forward with the Twin Peaks-Buckhorn roundup until it secures additional long-term holding facilities, but it is clear that the agency fully intends to remove horses from this area as soon as it can. Please oppose this BLM California mustang roundup plan.
Tell the President: Rep. Grijalva Should be Next Interior Secretary
Please join over 200 environmental groups in urging President Obama to appoint Congressman Raul Grijalva as the next Interior Secretary. The current Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, is expected to retire and return to his ranch in Colorado. Rep. Grijalva is a great friend of wild horses and burros, and has been a leader in the fight on Capitol Hill to reform the BLM program. As the former chair of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, Rep. Grijalva has demonstrated his commitment to responsible stewardship of our public lands. He would make an excellent Interior Secretary at a time when responsible and humane leadership is desperately needed. Please sign the petition to President Obama today!
Roundup Update: AWHPC Observer at Owyhee Complex Roundup in Nevada
The BLM has captured 720 wild horses in the Owyhee Complex roundup currently underway in northern Nevada. At least eight horses have died as a result of this capture operation.Temperatures at the roundup were often below freezing, and steam was regularly seen rising from the horses, who were sweating profusely from physical exertion despite the cold temperatures. (See the picture at left.) The BLM is using Sun J Livestock, Inc. as the contractor for the Owyhee roundup, and onsite observers, including an AWHPC videographer, have documented the ongoing atrocities. To watch video and see photos from week three of the roundup please click here. The BLM plans to capture 847 wild horses in this roundup, which is scheduled to either end or break on December 23.
Secretary Salazar Announces New Policy on Wild Horse and Burro Sales
Under scrutiny for the sale of thousands of wild horses to a known kill buyer, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar recently announced the implementation of a new policy regarding the BLM's sale of wild horses. Any sale of more than five horses in a six-month period to the same buyer will now require the signature of the Assistant Director of the BLM. Dave Phillips -- the journalist Salazar threatened to “punch out” after he exposed the sale of 1,700 wild horses to the kill buyer -- revealed the new policy in an article this week. Meanwhile, AWHPC's campaign to hold Secretary Salazar accountable for the broken federal wild horse program continues. Our request for a meeting with the White House to discuss this subject has now been endorsed by over 10,000 citizens. You can join the call by clicking here.
