WISCONSIN RESIDENTS: Please Call Senator Kohl Today

Your Action Could Stop Horse Slaughter From Resuming in U.S.A.

As a Wisconsin resident, you are a constituent of U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, Chair of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the USDA’s budget.

Senator Kohl will play a pivotal role in determining whether horse slaughterhouses reopen in the United States. You are in a special position to impact his decision! Your voice could not be more important for horses in the United States.

Until a few years ago, a handful of foreign-owned slaughterhouses operated in the U.S., butchering horses to supply horse meat markets in Europe and Asia. Americans spoke out against this cruel practice, and since 2005, Congress has prevented U.S. horse slaughter by cutting funds for inspections of horse meat from its annual Agriculture Appropriations Bill. (Without inspections, slaughter plants cannot sell horse meat for human consumption.)

Even though the current Congress prides itself on reducing government spending, some members are arguing that the USDA should resume funding inspections for equine slaughterhouses—a step that would allow them to reopen on U.S. soil! We have to make sure that the current Agriculture Appropriations Bill does not allow our precious tax dollars to enable the horrific killing of horses to supply foreign markets for horse meat.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Senator Kohl will soon decide if the House’s version of the Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which does include a ban on horse slaughter inspections, will be accepted.

Please contact Senator Kohl’s office right away at (202) 224-5653 and politely urge him to maintain the House’s language that prevents horse slaughter in the U.S. in the final appropriations bill.

You could simply say: “As a constituent, I ask Senator Kohl to please retain language in the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that bans the use of tax dollars to fund horse slaughterhouse inspections.” Please let the senator's office know if you own a horse, work with horses and/or are part of the horse industry.

That’s it! Making the call will be fast and easy, and could make a real difference for thousands of American horses while we work to pass a permanent ban on horse slaughter.  If you'd like to follow up your call by sending a fax, please click TAKE ACTION below.

Thank you for taking action for animals!

Please forward this alert to your friends and family who live in Wisconsin as soon as possible. The more Wisconsinites who call, the better!

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC) is dedicated to preserving the American wild horse in viable free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage. Supported by a coalition of over 40 organizations, its grassroots campaign seeks:

    * A suspension of roundups in all but verifiable emergency situations while the entire BLM wild horse program undergoes objective and scientific review;
    * Higher Appropriate Management Levels (AML) for wild horses on those rangelands designated for them;
    * Implementation of in-the-wild management, which would keep wild horses on the range and save taxpayers millions annually by avoiding the mass removal and stockpiling wild horses in government holding facilities.
